Notably, three teams—Utah in 1944, Kentucky in 1949, and City College of New York (CCNY) in 1950—achieved the rare feat of winning both tournaments in the same year.
The 1949–50 CCNY team remains the only college basketball team to accomplish this double victory.

By the mid-1950s, the NCAA Tournament began to overshadow the NIT in terms of importance.
In 1971, the NCAA barred universities from participating in other tournaments (like the NIT) if they received an invitation to the NCAA Tournament.

Ten of these championships were captured during a remarkable 12-year stretch from 1964 to 1975.
UCLA also holds the record for the most consecutive championships, winning seven in a row from 1967 to 1973.

Vacated Title:
In 2013, Louisville clinched the championship, but it was later vacated by the NCAA due to a sex scandal involving recruits and the university’s coach at the time, Rick Pitino.
